Discontinued in 2008. Continued by Clinical Lipidology (1758-4299). The field of lipidology research is on the cusp of major advances that will impact the health community in numerous ways. Emerging topics are both varied and highly challenging; Recent studies showing that an elevated LDL-cholesterol level significantly contributes to the development of coronary heart disease indicate that the impact of lipid-related illnesses is set to impose a huge burden on healthcare in the coming years, thus the development of novel LDL-cholesterol lowering therapies is essential; The emerging field of HDL-based therapeutics is proving to be an important area of study, with a number of compounds currently in clinical trials; Research into the molecular biology of lipid disorders, such as dyslipidemia, lipid transport disorders and the role of genetic inheritance, for example in the case of familial hypercholesterolemia, is more important today than ever before; An expanding area of research is the use of liposomes for the targeted delivery of drugs or therapeutic genes for the treatment of diseases such as cancer. Future Lipidology aims to cover all emerging topics in the field of lipidology, to provide the increasingly time-constrained scientific community with an accessible and definitive resource covering all aspects of lipids in health and disease.
