Theoretical Biology and Medical Modelling
Theor Biol Med Model
Theoretical Biology and Medical Modelling (TBiomed) is an Open Access, peer-reviewed, online journal adopting the broadest definition of "biology", and the conceptual modelling required to understand its complexity. Theoretical biology inevitably involves modelling, our way of conceptualising something tangible enough not to rely entirely on the spoken word. Medical modelling is included in the journal scope because a lot of fundamental biology leads to medical or veterinary applications. Cancer is a clear example. In this age of computing and bioinformatics, mathematicians, biophysicists, philosophers, historians of science, surgeons and cell physiologists come together to lend their talents to our emerging concepts. This is the field in which TBiomed will operate. Currently, manuscripts submitted to the main theoretical journals experience a long delay before they are refereed. Reviewers do not usually see the articles as topical and requiring urgent publication, but TBiomed is firmly against this attitude. Theoretical issues become topical in just the same way as any other research activity, and articles should have a quick turn around time. The online nature of TBiomed not only facilitates rapid peer review but also provides an excellent medium for communication in theoretical work. Referees' comments can be published as a valuable contribution to the debate, and readers can offer their views on an article by posting comments.
