For many years the journal was edited by Nobel Laureate Nikolai G. Basov, and under his guidance its prestige grew significantly in Russia and abroad. Papers cover the gamut of physics topics, with an emphasis on semiconductor and laser physics. The following are the main subject headings: Theoretical physics, Atomic and molecular physics, Nuclear physics, Optics, Lasers, Condensed matter physics, Physics of solids, Biophysics. Articles are sometimes coauthored by colleagues at other Russian Academy of Sciences institutes or at institutions outside of Russia. The emphasis is always on rapid and concise reporting of new and innovative research results.
