1996 is the Review's twelfth anniversary. At contemporary society's rapid pace of development, ten years represents a long time. Having guessed that data would become a crucial factor in the development of modern society's relations and production, was extraordinary foresight by those who founded the Review, back in 1985, the first year of its publication. An even more extraordinary foresight if one considers that the expression of a complex idea of two connected words, data and data processing, would, today, be taken for granted. However, in 1985, the above was, most certainly, a gamble on the future. In the aim of offering a research tool, above all, a working took, to those working in the widely-defined sector of communications, distinguished by its growth and popularity, not always corresponding to suitable answers being available, in terms of law, the Review describes the various stages of legal development and the most significant actions taken, as regards the subject of data, point by point. The issue regarding protection of an individual's rights against the mass media, a subject which has made the Review the most well-known publication in this sector, only represents a section of the scientific scenario it proposes. In fact, the problems concerning data are analysed from all significant legal viewpoints, such as the employment relation of journalists, publishing agreements and the special aspects which liability principles assume (third party and criminal), ensuing from rules regarding journalistic ethics. Moreover, the Review decided to devote space to radio and television communications, without omitting advertising aspects, concerning the licensing régime of television broadcasting, as well as dealing with problems connected to protecting subjective rights. Another ever-growing issue, which the Review has tackled from the very beginning, is the problem of advertising and sponsoring, both from the competitive viewpoint and, recently, from current specific law on the subject of misleading advertising. Furthermore, problems related to development of data processing technology and legal issues connected to application of the aforesaid, are no less important. On this subject too, the Review offers a comprehensive source of information, to gain knowledge of the applicable interpretative instruments available. The data processing sector is investigated under all aspects, from protection of confidentiality, when using or transmitting data from data-banks, to laws governing a programme's exclusive rights, as regards EDP programmers and data processing agreements.
