Popular culture, and in particular speculative fiction, contain visions of radically different futures. In some of these futures human beings coexist peacefully with extraterrestrial and machine intelligences, and with enhanced human beings with extraordinary physical and intellectual powers. In other imagined futures intelligence in any form than human beings circa 2000 are portrayed as an threat to humanity. Some foresee a world of constant strife, oppression and danger; others a world of transcendent peace and happiness. The plethora of visions reflect a diversity of attitudes towards human enhancement, technology and the prospects for a tolerant transhuman democracy, and a common set of hopes and fears.
