You already know that the process of adaptation to a new culture is an extremely stressful life event that can be a threat to the psychosocial well-being of immigrants. Some of these stressful experiences seem to have contributed significantly to problems addressed in the journal, such as: family violence, substance abuse, juvenile delinquency, alienation of the elderly, marital and intergenerational conflict, mental disorders. Many immigrants, particularly refugees, have traumatic experiences during and after migrating to a new country. For some of them, the after-effects of trauma and displacement may radically change the rest of their lives. Social workers and other helping professionals will need strong clinical skills to assess and treat these people who are dealing with both the short-term and long-term effects of trauma. The Journal of Immigrant & Refugee Services is where you'll be introduced to those skills.
