Published/Hosted by WITPress. ISSN: 1465-3222.

Bioengineering is the branch of biology which applies the methods of engineering, applied mathematics and physics to the study of biological phenomena, and the use of their concepts to describe these phenomena. The advantages of this approach are numerous, and this treatment has been very successful in the understanding of the mechanics of physiological processes. These technical tools and concepts provide a means of describing biomedical processes in terms consistent with their functions, and aid in the interpretation of failing physiological functions as well as the application of corrective techniques. Numerical analysis, a topic common to the fields of engineering, applied mathematics and physics, has been helpful in the understanding of biomedical phenomena by means of its computer simulation. The increasing speed and expanded storage capacity of modern computers, together with the new advanced numerical methods and programming techniques, have greatly improved the ability to study complex biomedical processes. Another major contribution brought to the medical community by computational facilities and numerical techniques, is the ability to analyse, manage and visualize massive amounts of date. Volumes in this series cover recent research in the applications of computing to analyse biomedical processes and medical data.
