Electronic Geosciences Electronic Geosciences (formerly Electronic Geology) is a new multimedia electronic journal recently acquired by Springer Verlag. The journal will cover the entire spectrum of the Earth Sciences including planetary and environmental geoscience. Its aim is to provide a medium for the rapid electronic publication of peer-reviewed first-class research papers electronic presentation of scientific data in a variety of multimedia formats outside the scope of a standard print journal interactive and open discussion of articles published in the journal between Earth scientists Traditionally scientists have relied upon the language of mathematics both in analysis and communication. Equations constants variables matrices and integrals were found to both prove and communicate complicated theories. This reliance upon mathematics is unsurprising because this language is both descriptive and broadly applicable. However with the advent of information technologies another language has sprung up a visual language more universal and more intrinsic than mathematics. Graphics and visualization now are emerging as powerful analytical and communicative tools. Still and animated images when properly used can convey extremely complex phenomena and patterns in a manner that no mathematical formula could ever do. Papers in Electronic Geosciences will be published inividually thereby ensuring the shortest possible delay after the completion of the formal reviewing process. All papers are submitted and refereed by peer-review electronically either via e-mail or anonymous FTP server. This usage of the Internet at every step of the reviewing and publication process leads to exceedingly short publication times of only a few weeks from submission to appearance. Thus this journal is particulary suitable for publication of results/ideas in rapidly evolving fields. Discontinued - now Visual Geosciences.
