There is no doubt that exciting structural engineering work is taking place in China. In a number of fields, such as space structures, cable-stayed bridges, high performance concrete and earthquake engineering, Chinese technology is amongst the best in the world. But, principally because of language difficulties, little Chinese work appears in international journals. Equally, Chinese workers have limited opportunity to attend international gatherings, and insufficient access to 'Western' journals. Advances in Structural Engineering will, inter alia, serve as a conduit for the flow of ideas between West and East, particularly China. The journal will publish papers from all parts of the world, with an emphasis on the publication of high quality papers from China. All papers submitted will be rigorously refereed. Advances in Structural Engineering will publish papers concerned with all aspects of structural engineering, including analysis, behaviour, design and construction. As well as full length papers, short technical notes, book reviews and conference reports, will also be published. In addition, the journal will publish short articles introducing to readers selected researchers and research institutions in China.
