The increasing speed and expanded storage capacity of modern high-performance computers, together with new advanced numerical methods and programming techniques, have greatly improved the ability to solve complex engineering problems. Indeed in order to tackle the complex problems with which engineers are faced today, it is necessary to have recourse to high-performance computing. Usually these problems involve the numerical solution of a system of partial differential equations, with large numbers of degrees of freedom. The application of supercomputing to numerically intensive problems brings together several new issues that do not appear in standard computing. New algorithms and codes are required in order to effectively exploit the use of these novel computer architectures, as programs suitable for conventional computers are likely to achieve very modest improvement of performance on vector and parallel processors. It is to bring such high-performance computing techniques to the attention of the broad international community that this book series has been established. The series consists of state-of-the-art books, containing chapters focusing on areas of current interest. Volumes in this series will include invited contributions from scientists currently carrying out research in this field. The series is backed by a prestigious Editorial Board of leading experts in high-performance computing from the international scientific community.
