Journal of Algerian Studies

ISSN: 1362-9417.

Since 1988, an ongoing political crisis has stimulated unprecedented international interest in Algeria, but, despite increased media attention and international commercial interest in recent years, Algeria remains an enigmatic and baffling country. Until now there has been no specialist journal in English dealing with Algeria, and the country's long and complex history, including the most profound colonial experience in the Arabo-Muslim world and an unusually bitter war of national liberation, is little known and its contemporary political and cultural life is poorly understood. The Society for Algerian Studies, at the School of Oriental and African Studies in London, has in recent years attempted to fill this major gap in academic awareness of the Arab, Islamic, African and Mediterranean worlds through its programme of lectures and conferences, and is now producing this journal to provide a vehicle for informed discussion of this important North African state.
