A Journal of the Academia Europaea. The European Review is a unique international journal covering a wide range of subjects. It has a strong emphasis on Europe and on economics history social science and general aspects of the sciences. Two issues each year are devoted mainly or entirely to a single subject and deal in depth with a topic of contemporary importance in Europe in which relevant aspects of natural science are integrated; the other issues cover a wide range of subjects but usually include a mini-review. The book reviews concentrate on books dealing with European issues. The first issue in 1999 will deal with cultural and ethical issues of modern biology as well as Peter Burke's Erasmus lecture on 'Erasmus and the Republic of Letters'. Later Focuses in the year will be on the origin and expression of personal identity the City and on Drugs in our Society. Some of the other articles will deal with CERN the sociology of language free movement and protectionism autobiographical writing and recent reforms in academic values.
