Gaia: Okologische Perspektiven in Natur-, Geistes- und Wirtschaftswissenschaften
ISSN: 0940-5550.
Humankind faces an ever increasing destruction of the natural foundations of life-a threat that is self-inflicted. One of the principal causes of this destruction is the blind economical exploitation of scientific and technological findings. On the other hand, it is obvious the problems at issue cannot be managed without the sensible use of scientific and technical means. The sciences, being separated into distinct disciplines, are insufficiently prepared to cope with complex environmental tasks. Ecological problems can only be solved through transdisciplinary cooperation, exceeding subject areas. Since 1992 GAIA - Ecological Perspectives in Science, Humanities, and Economics has met this challenge. It has encouraged the development of an integrated environmental science and an ecologically conscious economy. Thereby, transdisciplinarity is GAIA's central theme: The journal brings forward the technical exchange between the sciences as well as between science and society.
