Focaal - European Journal of Anthropology is now published and distributed twice a year by Berghahn Books. Focaal - European Journal of Anthropology advocates an approach that rests in the simultaneity of ethnography, processual analysis, local insights, and global vision. The journal is dedicated to studying 'down' as well as 'up', 'inward' as well as 'outward'. Focaal is rooted in debates on the ongoing conjunction of anthropology and history and the incorporation of local research settings in wider spatial networks of coercion, imagination, and exchange. While not at all excluding contributions that focus on other geographical areas, the editors encourage research on Europe broadly defined as 'the West', including post-socialist countries in the East. Europe is seen as an ongoing project of supra-national world-region formation that responds to, as well as embodies, current neo-liberal agendas. Focaal supports research into the problems, prospects and borders of this world-historical undertaking and believes that the comparative study of other world regions, including their exposure and response to similar and related forces, is an essential part of this program.
