The journal Médecine et Chirurgie du Pied was founded in 1984 under the impetus of Dr Simon Braun, who was its editor-in-chief until 1997. It is the official organ of the French Society of Medicine and Surgery of the Foot. After 17 years it is entering upon a new existence with a change of publisher. The French Society of medicine and Surgery of the Foot was founded in 1969 by Professor Paul Galmiche. The multidisciplinary nature of this Society does not allow isolation within one?s own specialty, rather to share ideas in order to understand a pathology as complex as that of the foot. This journal is the organ of expression of all those interested in the food and its pathology, both in France and abroad. The French Society of Medicine and Surgery of the Foot is one of the main members of the EFAS (European Foot and Ankle Society) and the IFFAS (International Federation of Foot and Ankle Societies). This is why the articles herein will be published variously in French or in English. Springer-Verlag has assumed responsibility for the continued publication of Medicine and Surgery of the Foot, the official organ of the French Society of that name and well-known to specialists in this field throughout the world. Its contents are required reading for all those involved in the management of foot injuries and diseases, as well as the relevant biomechanics and prosthetics: orthopaedic surgeons and traumatologists, rheumatologists, radiologists, neurologists, dermatologists, athletic advisers, and many others. Lesions of the foot may be intrinsic and localized or may provide the initial features revelatory of systemic disease. In this complex and fascinating field their early recognition and appropriate treatment will be greatly enhanced by the original articles, variously published in English and French, contained in this journal.
