Prooftexts was founded in 1980 to create a forum for the growing field of Jewish literary studies. Integral to the journals mission was an attempt to bring together the study of modern Jewish literatures (in Hebrew, Yiddish, and European languages) with the literary study of the Jewish classical tradition as a whole. Literary criticism and theory were proposed as a disciplinary lens through which all of Jewish writing - including the Bible and rabbinic and medieval literature - could productively be viewed.
