At the new millennium educators are working to achieve improvements in education in secondary (high) school and the universities. The scientific and educational communities are concerned with the different problems of education that exist in Latin American and others countries. We know that the knowledge and understanding of the natural sciences - Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics, possessed by citizens of all ages, have a direct impact on the level of the welfare and of the economic development of their society. Unfortunately we have several drawbacks in the educational systems which impact particularly in the teaching of the natural sciences at all levels. Some of the educational problems we have are: 1. the low level of knowledge and ability of students in the sciences; 2. problems with the preparation and training of teachers; 3. few advances in the utilization of the modern active methods of the teaching and involvement of students in their own learning; 4. the insufficient level of the utilization of the educational technology, for example, computers and Internet and other. The general aim of the new Journal of Science Education (Revista de Educacin en Ciencias, REC), that has support of different Universities and other organizations, is to help in resolving the different problems in teaching and learning in the natural sciences in the secondary (high) school and university in different countries by the means of investigations and publications of articles and similar materials. The first objective of the REC is to publish the results of the investigations of authors from different countries about various matters, and new active methods of physical, chemical, biological education. We also welcome material from investigations in the teaching of mathematics applied to the science instruction. We offer space for research work in the teaching environment sciences, biotechnology and other new interdisciplinary subjects, that have increasing importance for society. The second objective of the REC is to publish opinions and discussions on the improvement of the national and international educational policies on the teaching of sciences with contributions of specialists of the Ministries of Education, researchers and teachers in universities and secondary (high) schools . The REC is published in English and Spanish two times in the year (first number was published in January 2000).
