The Thoresby Society was founded in 1889 and is the Historical Society for Leeds and District. The aims of the society on its foundation were the collection and preservation of books and other objects relating to Leeds, the history of its inhabitants, and the preparation and publication of papers on subjects of historical and antiquarian interest and these remain remarkably unchanged in the twenty-first century.
